1 Corinthians 1:17
Memory Verse
For Christ did not send me to immerse, but to evangelize. Not with wisdom of words in order that the cross of Christ is without effect (1 Corinthians 1:17).
While discussing divisions within the Corinthian assembly, Paul turns to the topic of water baptism. The Christ is not divided. Paul was not crucified for us so that we are immersed into him (1 Corinthians 1:3).
Water baptism does not save, for if it were required for salvation, then Paul would have been sent to immerse. However, Christ did not send him to immerse but to evangelize: proclaiming Christ’s death on behalf of our sins and resurrection three days later (1 Corinthians 15:1–4).
Water baptism is for a good conscience before God, not the washing away of the filth of the flesh (1 Peter 3:21). Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ. Grace is God’s attitude whereby He gives a benefit without consideration of merit. Therefore, grace does not look at merit. Faith is taking God at His word; faith is the substance of that which is hoped for, the evidence of accomplished deeds not seen (Hebrews 11:1).
Therefore, there should be no divisions within the assemblies, for we are all equally part of one body (1 Corinthians 12:12–13). Those who cause division are carnal–focused on the flesh–and should be admonished by others to cease such activities (1 Corinthians 1:10).
