1 Corinthians 1:18
Memory Verse
For the word of the cross to those perishing is foolishness, but to those being saved, it is an inherent ability of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).
The gospel message (1 Corinthians 15:3–4), although simple, is contrary to the reasoning of fallen men. The wisdom that comes from the flesh relates to emotions, not logic; therefore, salvation by grace through faith is foolish, for it requires no work or remorse, only faith. Because the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, they will modify it to be more palatable by adding works or remorse for sins or by taking away the resurrection.
The gospel of Christ has the inherent ability to save (Romans 1:16). This is not an ability that comes from men, but is from God. Therefore, let us hold true to the full gospel—Christ died for our sins and was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures—for we are not persuading men; rather, we are bringing the message of reconciliation to a lost world.
