1 Corinthians 3:19–20
Memory Verse
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness alongside the God. For it is written, “The One catching the wise in their craftiness.” And again, “The Lord knows the thorough reasonings of the wise, that it is foolishness.” 1 Corinthians 3:19–20.
Wisdom is the proper use of knowledge. When the wise of this world use their wisdom for self-seeking and envy, the boast against the truth (James 3:14). This type of wisdom is earthly, soulish, and demonic in nature (James 3:15). The wisdom of this world uses persuasive speech over truth (1 Corinthians 2:4). The wise of the world use debating to obtain an appearance of maturity (1 Corinthians 1:20). Debating is not about presenting the truth, it is a matter of who is more convincing in their argument. However, in all its wisdom, the world does not know God (1 Corinthians 1:21).
When the foolishness of this world creeps into the Church, it brings with it a rejection of the truth. Just as with Paul, salvation is not through water baptism. Paul was not sent to immerse with water, but to proclaim the gospel for salvation (1 Corinthians 1:17). Water baptism does not save us; it is for a good conscience before God. Salvation is through believing that Christ died for our sins and was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1–5).
As it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” The Jews seek a sign, but the Gentiles go after wisdom. Thus, Christ crucified is a scandal to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles (1 Corinthians 1:22–24).
Let us be wise in the things that matter, not the things of this world nor this age. Therefore, we are not to boast in men, for we are Christ’s and Christ is God’s (1 Corinthians 3:24).
