1 Corinthians 3:3
Memory Verse
For where there is among you jealousy and strife and divisions, are you not carnal and walk according to man? 1 Corinthians 3:3.
The term “carnal” (σαρκικός) refers to thoughts, attitudes, and actions that issue, originate, or flow from the flesh (σάρξ). Divisions among the saints are a work of the flesh. This type of work is manifested when saints divide into different groups or follow different men.
In Corinth, some were saying they were of Paul, while others claimed to be followers of Apollos. This type of conduct comes from a mind framed on the things of the flesh. This is not about finding and following a good pastor who is diligent in training the saints. When an assembly has multiple teachers, they are not to divide themselves based on which teacher they like best. This type of division is segregating from others and treating them as if they are not a part of your group because they do not follow your pastor or leader.
From the flesh comes jealousy, a grief to have what another person possesses. This type of conduct boasts against the truth (James 3:14). Although some translations may opt to use the word “envy”, Jealousy is the negative side of zeal, not envy. Envy (φθόνος) is the strong desire against another person, without the desire to have what they possess. Jealousy (ζῆλος), desires to obtain what someone else has. Zeal is tireless devotion or diligence in supporting a belief, purpose, or activity, whereas jealousy is a negative aspect of zeal that arises from resentment over what another person possesses and, therefore, a strong devotion to obtain it. Along with jealousy and strife comes division, a partisan strife that disrupts unity.
Christians who are characterized in their conduct by jealousy, strife, or division walk according to men, not as the children of God.
