But if we should walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Christ keeps on cleansing us from all sin, 1 John 1:7.
Those who walk in the light display the character of Christ as the Holy Spirit produces fruit in them, thereby enabling them to manifest the quality of eternal life. This is the natural result of living out our salvation, for we were once darkness but are now light in the Lord. Therefore, we are to walk as born ones of light in all goodness, righteousness, and truth (Ephesians 5:8–9).
Light has no fellowship with darkness; therefore, when we are walking in the light, we will not share in common with the unfruitful works of darkness but will rather expose them (Ephesians 5:11). The natural result of walking in the light is that it exposes any actions in our lives that lead to sin—those not done out from faith. Thus, the blood of Christ keeps on cleansing us from our sins. This cleansing does not pertain to salvation, for in His death on behalf of sins and His resurrection three days later, Christ fully redeemed us. John is referring to how walking in darkness negatively impacts our lives in what we produce. As we walk in the light, our conduct will reject the works of darkness and cling to righteousness, for the blood of Christ keeps on cleansing us from our sins.
Walking in the light involves fellowship with other saints. As we share life together, we build one another up as members of one body to the glory of God, walking in the new commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you” (1 John 2:8; John 13:34).
