Stop loving the world, and the things of the world. If someone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 John 2:15).
The apostle is referring to the world system. That ordered system of commerce, culture, industry, and judicial systems that Satan designed and rules for the purpose of maintaining control over man’s sin nature by pacifying it (1 John 5:19; Ephesians 2:1–2).
The world system is a passive enemy that is indifferent to the grace believer; therefore, it will appear to be friendly and helpful when it can gain an advantage (1 John 3:13). Although we are not out from the world, our Lord did not seek to separate us from the world, but to guard us from the malignantly evil one. Since the world has been crucified to us, and us to it, we are to use it, but not abuse it (Galatians 6:14; 1 Corinthians 7:31).
Community outreach, feeding the poor, food pantries, and other such events are methods designed by the world system to attract unbelievers. The Church is a place for believers to come together, learn, and be edified so that they are no longer tossed around by every wind of teaching by the trickery of men (Ephesians 4:11–14). Its purpose is not to draw in unbelievers and pacify them. In doing good for all, we will not be involved in the methods of the world, but in doing what is beneficial and leading people to a saving faith in Christ through our proper conduct in this world, for it is our love for other saints that displays we are disciples of Christ (1 Timothy 3:7; John 13:34–35).
