Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about seeking someone he may devour, to whom you resist steadfast by the faith, knowing these same things of suffering are brought about among the brethren in the world (1 Peter 5:8–9).
On the night in which the Lord was betrayed, Peter experienced firsthand an attack from Satan. Satan is a cherub, not an angel (Ezekiel 28:14). He usurped rule over the earth and established the world system. Through this system, he pacifies the unbeliever (1 John 5:19). He is no stranger to manipulating men. In Peter’s case, Satan’s attack successfully persuaded a man who, only a few hours earlier, was willing to die for Christ to deny Him three times. Jesus had warned Peter that this attack was coming (Luke 22:34), yet he still fell (Matthew 26:75).
After His resurrection, Jesus restored Peter, instructing him to serve as a pastor for the Church (John 21:15–17). From this experience, and through Paul’s teachings, Peter learned how to overcome Satan. We must use the faith—the armor of God—to stand firm against him.
