And I request of you, brethren, to know those who labor among you, and stand before you in the Lord, and admonish you, and to highly regard them in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13).
In love, pay attention to and acknowledge those among the brethren who labor within the assembly for the benefit of the saints, ensuring its proper function and maintaining its overall condition. Hold in high regard the leaders who stand before you—not ruling over you—for among the saints we do not have rulers as the Gentiles do (Matthew 20:25). These men serve in a manner similar to how a father stands before his household, not as a master or CEO, but as those responsible for knowing and following the desirous will of God for the assembly (Ephesians 5:28–33). They hold their positions of authority rightly, administering their responsibilities while carefully maintaining good works and proper organization so that the needs of the saints are met, never abusing their authority over those who willingly submit to their leadership.
