Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 5:23.
The human nature consists of three parts: body, soul, and spirit. The spirit is our rational center, the soul relates to our emotions, and the physical body is the flesh. A grace believer is saved in his spirit and connected to God (1 Corinthians 6:17), while awaiting the salvation of his soul at the coming of our Lord (1 Peter 1:9). Since Christ’s death and resurrection have been imputed to him, the sin nature—which resides in the flesh—is rendered ineffective when he walks by the Spirit. Thus, it cannot fulfill its desires, and he is able to manifest the righteousness he possesses in Christ in every aspect of his life.
Although we await our full redemption—when we will be raised to be with Christ in the heavens—we already possess all things pertaining to life and godliness. Therefore, we can set apart every part of our being unto God, so that we are found in a blameless state at the coming of Christ. This is not a righteousness produced by self-effort, but an aspect of our salvation as we live out the righteousness we possess in Christ. Since this possibility exists, let us be diligent to work out are sure calling even election; for in so doing, we will never stumble (2 Peter 1:10).
