For you all are sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness (1 Thessalonians 5:5)
Sons relate to our position in Christ, not our sex. Our bounds are marked off to the placement of sons, both male and female (Ephesians 1:5). Sons are in a place of maturity and therefore not under law (Galatians 4:1–2). As sons, we are to train our senses to discern what is proper from what is wrong, walking in righteousness by seeking and fulfilling the desires of the Holy Spirit, while rejecting and overcoming the cravings of the flesh, Satan, and the world through the application of the proper defenses (Hebrews 5:14).
Night and darkness are where the sin nature manifests itself and where Satan rules. When we walk in darkness, we are not practicing the truth—the doctrine for victory over the sin nature (1 John 1:6). Therefore, our enemies can easily manipulate us. We were once darkness, but now we are light in the Lord. Let us walk as children of light, having no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather exposing them (Ephesians 5:8, 11).
