A faithful word: If someone aspires concerning the position of a bishop, he desires a proper work, 1 Timothy 3:1.
A bishop is a man appointed to the position of a pastor over an assembly. The term bishop is derived from the concept of overseeing or visitation; it refers to one who carefully watches over others. Because this position involves caring for and watching over the Church of God, there are specific requirements that all pastors must meet in order to maintain it. These requirements are not given for the assembly to use as leverage against the pastor, imposing an appearance of goodness, but so that the saints may know what kind of men are qualified to hold this position. For there are many wolves among the sheep who desire to devour them, and many others who seek to draw men after themselves, bringing in destructive teachings and denying the Lord.
