All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable towards teaching, towards reproof, towards correction, towards child-training in the righteousness, in order that the man of God may be well fitted, having been thoroughly equipped, facing every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
“God-breathed” is a term coined by Paul that does not merely mean “inspired by God.” It is formed by combining the words “God” and “breathed,” thereby expressing that God is the direct source and author of Scripture.
In this passage, we find two distinct forms of information that are profitable for the grace believer:
Teaching refers to information that is learned but not put into practice. This form of instruction relates to the Old Testament and Prophecy, which provide knowledge and understanding but are not prescriptive for the believer's conduct under grace.
Child-training refers to doctrine specific to the grace believer—instruction that governs conduct. It is information intended for practical application, training the believer in the way of righteousness.
