In a beginning God created the heavens and the earth, Genesis 1:1.
Although many of our English translations add an article (‘the’) to the word beginning, this does not convey what the Hebrew expresses. Genesis 1:1 is not describing the beginning of all creation; rather, it refers specifically to the time when God created the heavens and the earth.
Before God created the universe, He created the spirit beings: Cherubim, Seraphim, and angels. The Cherubim are the highest order of created beings, holding the highest positions of authority in God’s government. Lucifer was created as the pinnacle of them all (Ezekiel 28:11), and he reigned over them from Eden (Ezekiel 28:13–14). Therefore, Genesis 1:1 does not describe God’s first act of creation; rather, it is more accurately conveyed in the original Hebrew. The universe was created as a dwelling place for the spirit beings, who also witnessed God create it and shouted for joy in response (Job 38:7). This act of creation brought the entire universe into existence out of nothing, displaying God’s incredible inherent omnipotence.
