Genesis 13:10
Memory Verse
And Lot lifted his eyes and looked all around the Jordan, that all of it was watered—before the LORD ruined Sodom and Gomorrah—like a garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar (Genesis 13:10).
After departing from Egypt, Abram and Lot returned to Bethel, placing their tents between Bethel and Ai (Genesis 13:3). At this time, both had become wealthy with livestock, which led to strife between their herdsmen (Genesis 13:7). To resolve this peacefully, Abram proposed that Lot choose where he would like to reside so they could spread out across the land, which was more than sufficient to sustain them both (Genesis 13:8–9).
In response, Lot examined the surrounding land and chose the valley of Sodom and Gomorrah, drawn by its well-watered appearance. Abram respected Lot’s decision and remained in the land of Canaan, while Lot took his possessions and settled in the cities of the plain, ultimately residing in Sodom (Genesis 13:12).
Following Lot’s departure, the LORD declared to Abram all the land He would give his descendants (Genesis 13:14–15). At this point, Abram had not yet expressed faith in the LORD’s words. To help Abram understand the possession offered to him and his descendants, the LORD instructed him to arise and walk the land (Genesis 13:17–18).
