And the LORD God formed Adam of the dust from the earth, and He breathed the breath of lives into his nostrils, and Adam became a living soul (Genesis 2:7).
In chapter two of Genesis, we are given a more detailed description concerning the creation of Adam. His body was formed from the dust of the ground, where the soul and spirit were created out of nothing by God breathing the breath of lives into his body.
Although many English translations make “life” singular—the breath of life in the Hebrew is plural. In 1 Thessalonians 5:23, the three parts of a human are described: body, soul, and spirit. The soul animates the physical body and interprets the five senses (Genesis 9:4), the spirit is the rational center of a person (1 Corinthians 2:11), and the body is the tent (2 Corinthians 5:4).
