Genesis 3:14–15
Memory Verse
And the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all the cattle and from every beast of the field. Upon your belly you will go and you will eat the dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head and you will crush his heel (Genesis 3:14–15).
After the transgression of Eve and the sin and trespass of Adam, punishment came upon them. Since the serpent, who is a beast of the field, was involved in the deceptions of Eve, God also punished both the creature and the being behind the creature’s action, Satan. The serpent will crawl on its belly and eat the dust of the ground all the days of its life. Lucifer, however, will be crushed by the seed of the woman. This statement was the first prophecy concerning the coming of one from the seed of a woman who would restore the relationship of man with God and destroy Satan.
We see an expression of faith in Eve regarding this promise in Genesis 4:1, for she perceived that her firstborn son would fulfill it. However, the LORD foretold of one far greater than Cain.
