Hebrews 4:1
Memory Verse
Therefore, we fear, while a promise remains to enter into His rest, lest any out from you should think to fall short, Hebrews 4:1.
Israel did not enter into God’s rest because of unbelief. When God brought them to the promised land, they feared the inhabitants more than they trusted in their God who delivered them from Egypt (Numbers 13:33–14:5). Because of their unbelief, God caused them to wander in the wilderness until the bodies of those who sinned fell in the wilderness (Hebrews 3:17).
Therefore, a rest still remains. This rest is not a seventh-day rest; rather, it is a seven-day rest from one’s own works to seek righteousness. Even at Mount Sinai, Israel rejected the covenant of promise, seeking to show God, through their own works, that they could be righteous (Exodus 19:8).
Let us enter into His rest. A rest that involves living a life of righteousness apart from the dead works of the flesh. This is not a life lived by law, for law is not out from faith (Galatians 3:12). The just live out from faith (Romans 1:17). We have been co-crucified with Christ and co-raised to walk in newness of life. Therefore, the life that we now live in the flesh is to be a life out from faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20).
