James 1:25
Memory Verse
But one bending over to look into the mature law of liberty and abides alongside this, he has not become a forgetful hearer but a doer of work. This one is happy in all he does (James 1:25).
The law of liberty is the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus that sets us free from the law of the sin and death (Romans 8:2). The law of the sin and death is that every time through our flesh we desire to do good, the wrong that we do not want to do works itself out (Romans 7:21). Although with the flesh we serve the law of sin, with our minds we serve the law of God and are thereby set free from bondage to our sin nature (Romans 7:25).
The one who hears and responds to the law of liberty will walk according to the Spirit, fulfilling the law of liberty in Christ, for his mind is framed on spiritual things—on the things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1)—not on the things of the earth or the flesh (Romans 8:6-8). This one will not govern his life by the Mosaic law, for that is one who is not a hearer. Instead, in hearing and responding to the truth, this one will walk by grace, living a life of righteousness through Christ, who abides in him (Galatians 2:20).
