And the peace from God, the one surpassing all the mind, will guard your hearts and the conclusions of your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
Peace is a calmness of mind that results from knowing and trusting in God. It is an aspect of the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit in our lives, enabling us to walk in it when we are led by Him (Galatians 5:22–23). This peace can rest upon us in such a way that, even when we do not fully understand what God is doing, our minds remain undisturbed in the face of any circumstance.
This peace guards our heart—our center, where our personhood and determinate will reside—as well as the workings of our mind, so that our reasoning leads to accurate conclusions. The word translated as “mind” in this passage conveys more than just mental faculties. In the original language of Scripture, Paul used a form of the word for “mind” that expresses the result of an action—namely, the outcome of mental activity. Therefore, God’s peace actually protects the conclusions we reach.
