Psalm 3:8 | God is My Shield in Betrayal 🙏 David vs Absalom
Memory Verse
Deliverance belongs to the LORD; Your blessing is upon your people. Selah (Psalm 3:8).
After slaying his brother Amnon for forcing his sister Tamar to lie with him, Absalom was brought back to Jerusalem by Joab because of David’s longing for his son (2 Samuel 14:1, 23). Although Absalom was not permitted to enter the king’s presence, he became emboldened and set himself up as a judge in Israel (2 Samuel 15:2). By doing so, Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel (2 Samuel 15:6). He then used this support to take the throne from David (2 Samuel 15:14).
As David fled from Absalom, he wrote the third Psalm, pouring out his trouble to the LORD (Psalm 3:1–2). Although many say there is no help for David from God, David understood that God is his shield and the one who lifts him up (Psalm 3:3–4). Because the LORD sustains him, David does not fear those coming against him. After crying out to the LORD, David calms his anxieties by knowing that deliverance comes from the LORD (Psalm 3:5–8).
While waging war against David and his servants, Absalom became entangled in a terebinth tree and was put to death by Joab (2 Samuel 18:15). David did not desire his son’s death; however, through Absalom’s death, he was delivered from death, and the kingdom was restored under his authority (2 Samuel 18:33).
