Revelation 1:1
Memory Verse
A revelation belonging to Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to show His servants what must soon take place. Having made it known, He sent it through His messenger to His servant John (Revelation 1:1).
The book of Revelation is a single revelation given to Jesus Christ to give to us, the Church, so we know what must take place. It shows what will come quickly once these events begin. The term “shortly” may refer to time or speed. Paul was told to quickly leave Jerusalem because his testimony would not be accepted (Acts 22:18), where “quickly” means with speed. In contrast, time is emphasized when Festus plans to go to Jerusalem, giving leaders a chance to accuse Paul (Acts 25:4).
The first three chapters of Revelation reveal the seven periods of the Church on earth, which began shortly after John wrote Revelation. Therefore, from both the author’s and our perspectives, “quickly” in Revelation 1:1 refers to time. These events are already underway. After the seven Church periods end, the Tribulation period will begin.
