And the gift is not as through one having sinned. For on the one hand, judgment out from one having sinned unto condemnation, on the other hand, the gracious gift out from many trespasses unto justification. For since in the trespass of the one [man] the death reigned through the one [man], by how much more the ones receiving the abundance of the grace and the gift of righteousness in life will reign through the one Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:16–17).
In contrast to Adam’s sin, which brought condemnation to all, and his trespass, which allowed spiritual death to reign, Christ’s work on the cross results in the gift of righteousness through His physical death for sin, as well as spiritual life through the gracious gift—for He died to the sin nature once for all, freeing those who believe from its reign. Therefore, righteousness and eternal life reign in the believer through Jesus Christ.
Therefore, since we are now free from the reign of the sin nature in Christ, let us walk as those who are righteous before God in the fullness of life—not through law, and not seeking to fulfill the desires of the flesh. Rather, as those who are righteous, let us walk as sons—those who, through training their senses, properly discern between what is wrong and what is proper, so that in every aspect of their lives they act in a righteous manner by knowing and doing the desirous will of God.
