But since that which I (new nature) do not desirously will, this I (old nature) do, it is no longer I (new nature) working it out, but the sin [nature] residing in me (Romans 7:20).
The problem is not that I do not desire to do good, but that within my flesh resides a nature that seeks to work out the very wrong I do not desire to do. Since law is not out from faith, and one of the works of the flesh is religious superstitious awe, seeking to live by law feeds the sin nature and its desires, thereby failing to produce the righteousness I am seeking to live out.
This is a frustrating place to be: I desire to do good and apply law, which is logical for doing good, yet strong desires remain within me that work out what is wrong. There is no freedom through the flesh.
